Claims he didn't send any Spurs players off in the game they finally lost out on the title to Leicester because he didn't want to be blamed for their failings. So basically admitting that he didn't want to do his job properly because he didn't want to look bad (not that I'm bothered by the outcome, but what a cunt)

Mark Clattenburg booked nine Tottenham players against Chelsea in 2016 - the most yellow cards ever handed to one team in a Premier League match

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg says he "allowed Tottenham to self-destruct" when he refereed the 2-2 draw with Chelsea in May 2016 as Spurs conceded the title to Leicester.

Spurs needed to beat Chelsea to retain any hope of winning the league.

Clattenburg says he "went in with a gameplan" so he could not be blamed by Tottenham for losing the title.

He booked nine Spurs players in the bad-tempered match, but now says he could have sent off three players.

Chelsea and Tottenham received record fines from the Football Association following the game, while Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele was banned for six games for violent conduct against Chelsea's Diego Costa.

Speaking to NBC's Men in Blazers podcast, he said: "I allowed them [Spurs] to self-destruct so all the media, all the people in the world went: 'Tottenham lost the title.'

"If I sent three players off from Tottenham, what are the headlines? 'Clattenburg cost Tottenham the title.' It was pure theatre that Tottenham self-destructed against Chelsea and Leicester won the title."

Asked if he helped to "script" the game, he replied: "I helped the game. I certainly benefited the game by my style of refereeing.

"Some referees would have played by the book; Tottenham would have been down to seven or eight players and probably lost and they would've been looking for an excuse.

"But I didn't give them an excuse, because my gameplan was: Let them lose the title."

Clattenburg took charge of the Euro 2016 final, as well as that year's Champions League and FA Cup finals.

In February, he left his job as a Premier League official to become Saudi Arabia's new head of referees.

Clattenburg says he had to change his style of refereeing when he took charge of European matches.

"The English style of refereeing is different," he added.

"I had to referee differently when I went into Europe because none of the top players in Europe would accept some of the physical contact that went on in the Premier League - but that was the theatre, that's what people loved.

"They love a tackle, they don't want it punished."

I think it just confirms what we all know
They ref different teams differently to their own agendas
Has there been any comment by the Premier league , the refereeing body or ANYONE?
It’s an admission of match fixing pure and simple

One of my favourites was Jeff Winter (remember him?) who reffed his last game at Anfield and in his book said he delayed the final whistle until the ball was in front of the Kop and believed the Liverpool fans applause at the end was for him

so he confirms what we all know. They dont just ref the game as they see it, they sometimes go in with an agenda and we dont know why or when. Bent totally bent

I was Clive Thomas's paper boy. As a 14-year-old, I was quite chuffed to be delivering the South Wales Echo to a WC ref.

I used to collect the money too, every Friday, and the Friday before Xmas I'd always say 'Happy Christmas' and wait for my tip. The bill was 48p and nearly everyone gave me a pound and thanked me for getting their paper to them. Some used to give me £2, one kind woman a fiver.

I remember knocking on CT's door, thinking this guy must be loaded - bumper tip time! He opened the door and I said 'Happy Christmas'! He handed me 50p, said "Happy Christmas" back, followed by 'Keep the change" then shut the door.

I think I was more gutted than Zico.

Actually, even though I disagree with this on general principle, as it mugs off the yids, I don't see it as his worst crime.

It happened again, tottenham hotspur, even if the ref gave you several let offs.

Is it naive of me to only want a disinterested judge of what they actually see refereeing a game of football without them thinking that a single person is there to watch THEM?

'Oh goody, I can't wait for the game this weekend- Mark Clattenberg is ref- I LOVE him and his sense of "theatre".

It really takes a special kind of 'I would have loved to have been a policeman really' cunt to want to be a referee.

Like that cunt (maybe Graham Poll? I'm not wasting my time looking it up) who bought out his autobiography (which probably sold about 5 copies) called 'I'm in charge'. The title says it all about how highly they seem to rate themselves.

Here's a tip in the unlikely event that a Premier League ref is reading this. If 30 thousand people regularly shout 'you don't know what you're doing' at you, you probably don't know what you're doing.

Sounds like he was a bit more lenient than normal. Nothing abnormal in reality to what a lot do I expect but never openly admit. Strange he didn't want the headlines so was lenient, but now wants the headlines by speaking out.

All refs would probably say they aren't ever swayed by constant appealing and being hounded by players and managers/coaches, when they all know they are. See a lot of non league games and often a manager and chosen henchmen work the ref from the first whistle. Non stop complaining and verbal abuse in the hope of buying a decision at some point. You see refs fold under the fake outrage. Brian Clough would give all these dissenters a slap round the ed.

It’s been going on for a generation now since sky got their hooks into football and saturated screens with all kinds of mundane aspects of the game. Referees see themselves as there to orchestrate the game as a spectacle rather than enforce the rules. I wonder if other countries view their refs with the same contempt as we do?

Cutterfuck is clearly an egotistical twerp who thinks the game is about him but you still can't beat Hackett as a top drawer cunt of a ref.
Writing in the Telegraph after the Watford game he said that refs should target Andy Carroll from the off, so assuming him to be guilty before he even steps on the pitch.

It's two weeks since he wrote this clearly biased rant and I'm still surprised that the club haven't made a move to protect their player from these outrageous comments from the former head of refs.

Why do you think Ferguson (& Wenger & Mourinho etc) complain about every decision that goes against them and moan and moan?
Because they know insipid turds like Clattenburg are scared of them and will give them borderline decisions and not so borderline ones for a quiet life.

Especially when your consider how that poor Sutton keeper was dragged through the mud for eating A PIE.

But they won't even out. Main thoughts will be like 'Mourinho is going to go after me in the press if I send his player off/don;t send an oppo player off.' 'Klopp is going to drag my name over the coals if I give this penalty againt Liverpool or don;t give this penalty FOR Liverpool.'

They'll always worry about avoiding the big stories (i.e. the wrath of the big teams) if that's their mentality. Which means the fall guys will always be the little guys they happen to be playing against who will undoubtedly suffer if the refs don't want to get in the way of what the big teams are doing.

You see it play out all the time on varying levels each saturday. Dodgy pen for the big team. Nailed on pen not given for the small team. Red card challenges only given yellows or somehow ignored.

Wonder what the Leicester fans think of this?

In such a decisive game the referee has admitted that he should of shown 2 or 3 red cards but in fact didn't send anybody Spurs players off!

Someone has already mentioned it but what happens if one of those players scored the winner in a period of time that they shouldn't of been on the pitch?????

I think they all do stuff like that. As long as they apply it evenly I don't see a problem. Better than making a name for himself like Hackett or Clive Thomas. Would have been better if he kept it to himself.
